| An internet search for "BC Penitentiary Cemetery" doesn't generate many hits (though it will lead you to the first two websites listed under "BC Penitentiary", below, both of which are excellent starting points). But once you know a little about the penitentiary, the history of New Westminster, federal corrections and the online resources available for researching government records, there's a lot of information available online.
The specific nature of your interest in the cemetery will determine which records will be most useful to you. If you are interested in the site itself, you'll probably want to pursue information available through the Lower Mainland Land Title Office, the City of New Westminster, and the provincial Registrar of Cemeteries. If you are interested in the history of one or more of the men buried at the site, there are a myriad of online resources available. Don't neglect old newspapers, often available on microfilm at your local public library -- the crime for which the individual you are researching was incarcerated will often have been reported in the local paper (in some cases, especially for prisoners incarcerated during the 1950s and 1960s, it will have been reported nationally). |
